Best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, Rhosawel on celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary earlier in the year, and all the best for the future.

Mr. Gomer Davies has just spent a short time at Gobowen Hospital, Oswestry for an operation. Welcome home, and all the best for a full and speedy recovery.

A coffee morning was held in the Hall by Mrs. Yvonne Law, Ty Dŵr to raise money towards MacMillan Cancer Support on the 27th of September. This event was part of a nationwide series of coffee mornings and £301 was raised. Many thanks to Mrs. Law for organizing the event, and to everyone who contributed towards its success.

Mrs. Heulwen Lloyd, Penbont would like to thank to all who contributed to Cancer Research Wales UK. A total of £478.77 was raised. The winter programme has got off to a good start in the hall with a classical concert on Sunday, 5th of October. A variety of music was performed by Angela Brownridge on the piano. Ms Brownridge is a graduate of Edinburgh University, and has studied in Rome and London. Ms Brownridge is an accomplished pianist and has played with many orchestras. In 2005, she became the Musical Director of the Piano Academy at Dean Clough, and she works regularly with master class students. Ms Brownridge will return to the Hall with the Lampeter Chamber Orchestra on the 24th of January to perform Beethoven’s ‘Emperor Concerto’.
On the 11th of October we welcomed ‘Côrdydd’ to the Hall, and a great evening was had with the young choir singing a variety of songs, ably conducted by Ms Sioned James, with Branwen Gwyn playing the piano. The evening’s president was Ms Rhiannon Griffiths, Brecon (previously from Ochrbryn). During the interval we welcomed Shân Cothi following her trek to raise money for the ‘amserjustintime’ charity, and we presented a cheque to her for the proceeds of the Concert held on the 7th of September. Thank you to Heulwen Williams and Lloyds TSB for the £500 sponsorship towards the evening. A total of £1065 was presented to the charity, and ‘Côrdydd’ also decided to ask the Hall to donate their fee to the charity.
Mr. Eirian Morgan, Chairman of the Hall Council presented a small dresser to Elfyn Davies, the Secretary as appreciation for his contribution towards the Hall’s activities over the last 30 years.
‘Parti Cut Lloi’, conducted by Siân James will be holding a concert in the Hall on Saturday, 6th of December. The President will be Mrs. Gladys Lewis, Dyffryn, Cae Dash, Lampeter. The annual Concert and Carol Singing will be in the Hall on Sunday, 21st of December, at 7.30pm. The soloist will be Ina Morgan, Llanfynydd, and the proceeds will be donated to the ‘Beacon of Hope’ charity.

Three of the village’s young people ran in the Cardiff Marathon on the 19th of October – Lowri Davies and Barrie and Amanda Jones. Congratulations to them for making the effort and for raising a substantial amount of money for good causes.

Llanycrwys Church has organized a concert with ‘Bois y Castell’ to be held at the Hall on Saturday 29th of November, at 7.30pm. The President will be Dr John G David, Hereford – previously of Peronne, Ffarmers. On the 1st of December, the Church’s annual Whist Drive will be held in the Hall.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Gomer Davies, Troed y Bryn as they celebrate their diamond wedding on the 21st of September. They were married in Crugybar Chapel in 1948 by the late Reverend Glenville Rees, and they have lived in Troed y Bryn since. All the best to you.

Rhiannon Thomas, Bryndolau has been in Glangwili Hospital recently for surgery. Best wishes and get well soon.

The residents of Ffarmers welcomed Shan Cothi and her friends while they were passing through the village en route from North Wales to South Wales, raising money for the charity ‘amserjustintime’. The crew arrived at the Caeo and Llanycrwys show on Saturday 6th September. The horses and riders stayed overnight at Ffarmers before resuming their journey on the Sunday morning. A crowd of well wishers came to the village to see the riders off, and another 50 or so horses and riders joined them on the Ffarmers to Llandovery leg. On the Sunday night, a Concert was arranged in the hall to raise money towards the charity. The president was Mr David Thomas, Cilgerran – the headteacher of Ffarmers school while Shan was a pupil. Over £1000 was raised and it was sponsored by Lloyds TSB. Further details are available on

We are happy to announce that a grant of £63,000 has been awarded by the Big Lootery Fund to develop a play area for the area’s children. A group of parents and friends have been busy for a few years raising money and applying for grants. Many thanks to Mrs Janice Sidebottom, Dolaugwynion – Chairman of the group, and all the committee for their hard work.

We are sorry to report the sudden passing of Mr Iwan Davies, 4 Bryntwrch, on the 2nd of July. Our condolences go to his brother Dewi, and sister Rhiana as well as all the family. The funeral was held in Bethel, Cwm Pedol, officiated by the Reverend Goronwy Wynne.
Our sympathies are also extended to Mr and Mrs Wyn Jones and family in Cardiff following the death of Julie’s father, Mr Gareth Thomas. Julie’s family were originally from Trapp, but Mr and Mrs Thomas had settled in Cardiff for some years. The funeral was held in Llanelli Crematorium.

Congratulations to Dr a Mrs Jonathan Mullins, Sychnant on the birth of their son, Deri Jacob – a brother to Taigh. Also to Gareth a Lorraine Jones, Blaenau on the birth of their son, Gary – a little brother to Jessica.
Congratulations to Emyr Davies, Ciliau Aeron, previously from Llwyncelynmawr on being awarded a B.Sc. degree in building lately. Emyr works for Carmarthenshire County Council as a building Inspector.
Three local young people have been elected as officials of Dyffryn Cothi Young Farmers Club for the new year. Ian O’Connor, Buarth yr Oen is the Chairman, Aled Jones, Tyllwyd is Vice-Chairman and Carys Thomas, Penywaun is the Treasurer. Congratulations to Ian on winning the Intermediate Shearing competition in the local shearing competition held in Llandre, Pumsaint, and for his success in the shearing competitions in the Royal Welsh Show in Builth.

A posse of 6 horses, led by Shân Cothi, will head off from Talacre Beach, near Prestatyn in North Wales towards their destination in Ogmore Village, near Bridgend in South Wales.for a three week ride to raise money and knowledge of pancreatic cancer. On the 6th of September, the team will ride from Tregaron to Ffarmers.
Shân Cothi will lead the ‘Amser Justin Time' charity ride to Ffarmers show field along with a posse of close friends, Brychan Llyr (presenter of S4C's ‘Rasus Ar Garlam' and the BBC's ‘Against All Odds'); Siân Jones (his wife!); Steffan Rhodri (actor - ‘Gavin and Stacey' fame and ‘Con Passionate'); Chris Lewis (friend and editor) and Branwen Buckler (Justin's sister).
Justin Smith was an exceptional man who sadly died at the young age of 42 from Pancreatic Cancer. Many regarded him as a talented TV director and editor, others knew him as Pepsi Tate from the notorious glam rock band Tigertailz. He was a daring, sweet, funny, highly intelligent gentle giant. He was many things to many people and is sorely missed by all who knew him. His widow Shân Cothi, and close friends have set up this registered charity in his name to raise awareness of this cruel disease. The money raised will provide care and support for pancreatic cancer patients and their families in Wales, as well as funding the medical profession for investigation and research into pancreatic cancer.
Money raised will go towards care and treatment of patients suffering from this cancer in Wales, as well as funding research.

We offer our condolences to the family of Mrs Dorothy Jukes, Ffawyddog, who passed away recently at the age of 95 years old. The funeral service was held in Llanycrwys Church on Friday, 6th of June, then in Aberystwyth Crematorium. We also offer our condolences to the family of Mrs Ann Hughes, Carmel, Crosshands who passed away following a long illness. Ann was known locally as Ann Dolaucanol.

Happy Birthday to Mrs Audrey Jones, Glanyreryr, who recently celebrated her ninetieth birthday.

Mrs Joan Davies, Troed y bryn would like to thank her friends and relations for their wishes and gifts on the occasion of her eightieth birthday lately. Thank you very much.

Ian O’Connor and Adrian Evans have recently won prizes for sheep shearing, both locally, in YFC competitions and outside Wales in the Bath and West and Devon County shows.
Congratulations and Best Wishes to Gwennan Evans on getting a new job in Caerdydd as a Literature Officer with ‘The Academy’. Gwennan is a former pupil in the village school and Lampeter Comprehensive school and has just graduated from Bangor University after reading Welsh and Creative Writing.
Good Luck to Carys Thomas, Penywaun who will be following a musical course with the Three Counties Choir in Llandovery College at the beginning of July, and performing with the Choir in the Arts Hall, Aberystwyth on the 9th of July. Congratulations on passing your driving test, too.

The annual Gymanfa was held this year in Bethel, Cwm Pedol on Sunday 18th of May, ably conducted by Mrs Carys Lewis, Cwmann. Mrs Llinos Jones from Noddfa, Lampeter was the President in the afternoon children’s service, with the readings by Dafydd and Alwyn Morgan and Deian Thomas from Bethel, and an item by the children from Noddfa Sunday School. Mr Eirian Morgan, Bethel Cwm Pedol was the President of the evening adult service.

On Friday the 23rd of May, a Cheese and Wine evening was held in the Hall. We welcomed Maugan, Kim a Rob from Gorwydd Cheese, Llanddewi Brefi, launched in 1996 my the Trethowan family. By now, the cheese is sold all over the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. The product is Caerphilly Cheese, and our guests explained in detail the process of making the cheese, maturing and the continual care of the cheese until it is sold. The Trethowan family have had much success with the cheese winning awards in the UK and worldwide. As well as the Gorwydd Cheese, other cheeses were sampled, including Pont Gâr, Blaenavon Cheese and Tintern Cheese – complemented by a selection of quality wines and port.

The Hall Committee would like to thank the community council for their gift of £300 towards the Hall. This donation towards the upkeep of the Hall is very much appreciated.

The Cudyll Coch Drama Company from Llandeilo visited once again this year. While welcoming the audience, Eirian Morgan, the Chairman of the Hall Committee referred to the recent passing of Mr Jack Davies, Glantwrch, Pumsaint, who had accepted an invitation to be president for the evening. Mr Davies was a community councilor for many years, and had been awarded the M.B.E. earlier in the year. As a sign of respect, the audience stood for a minute’s silence before commencing the drama. A kind donation was received by the Tremavon family in memory of Jack Davies. Two comedies were performed – ‘Iechyd Da’ by David Jones, and ‘Gweld Ser’ by Peter Hughes Grifiths, and the audience enjoyed the evening.

BBC Radio Cymru visited the village on the 18th of April to broadcast their daily breakfast programme, ‘Jonsi’. During the programme, Jonsi spoke with some of the school children and local residents and some members of the Hall Committee prepared some breakfast for everybody who had come to listen and take part in the programme.

Happy Birthday to Mrs Joan Davies, Troed y Bryn on celebrating her eightieth birthday recently. A day of celebration was enjoyed by family and friends.

Over Christmas, local people went carol singing to raise money towards Bro Fana Park. Over £780 was raised with the help of Lowri Davies and the Barclays Bank pound for pound scheme.

The Llandeilo drama company will be visiting on the 12th of April, 2008 to perform two comedies – ‘Iechyd Da’ (Cheers) by David Jones and ‘Gweld Ser’ (Seeing Stars) by Peter Hughes Griffiths. The president for the evening will be Mr J.H. Davies M.B.E., Glantwrch, Pumsaint. A warm welcome is extended to all, and the evening will start at 7.30pm.

A Cheese and Wine Evening will be held at the Hall on Friday the 23rd of May at 8.00pm. Mr Maugan Trethowan from the Gorwydd Cheese Company, Llnaddewi Brefi will be joining us to talk about the cheese making process. The company produces Caerphilly Cheese that is very popular, being distributed over a vast area, as well as being exported. There will also be a wine expert attending. A warm welcome is extended to all.

BBC Radio Cymru will be broadcasting the morning show ‘Jonsi’ from the Hall on Friday 18th April from 8.30 – 10.30am. Everyone is welcome to join us during the morning.

january/february 2008

Mrs Ann Edwards from Tregaron visited the village on the 12th of February to receive a cheque for £540 for the Wales Air Ambulance. This money was raised during the annual carol concert, with the help of Lowri Davies and the Barclays Bank £1 for £1 scheme. Mrs Edwards thanked everybody for their support.

We welcomed the Lampeter Chamber Orcehstra to the village on Sunday 27th of January to give a concert of classical music. Work by Rossini, Bach, Bartok, Mozart and Haydn was performed.

Professor David Thorne from Lampeter University visited the Hall on the 11th of February to talk about local place names. It was an opportunity to learn about the origins of local place names, many dating back centuries. Thank you to the ‘Square Mile’ fund for sponsoring the evening.

Nearly eighty farmers took advantage of a training and test day for the Transport of Animal licence at the Hall on the 7th of February. Farmers from a wide area came to do their tests, mostly on laptop computers. The course was run by Mid Wales and Marches Assessment Centre. Thank you to John Mercer and Rhys Davies for organising the day.

Thank you to Councillor Eirwyn Williams for securing £800 from the County Council’s Local Porjects fund. This money is available for Councillors to distribute to voluntary organisations within their local communities.

We will shortly be starting an ink cartridge recycling scheme in the Post Office. You will be able to bring your spent cartridges to the Post Office and the Hall will receive money to put towards running activities in the local area.
